In 2011, Desert Towers was published. This book captures something of the history of climbing on the remote towers of the Colorado Plateau.

The Story

Before Desert Towers, there were three main sources of information about climbing in the Southwest desert: Eric Bjornstad’s Desert Rock guidebook, Layton Kor’s Beyond the Vertical memoir, and Katy Cassidy and Earl Wiggins’s Canyon Country Climbs. By the early 2000s these were all long out of print. There are also a handful of magazine articles, over the years.

Which is a shame. The Colorado Plateau is the most colorful landscape on our planet; it is festooned with the most dramatic scenery: spires, arches, and pinnacles amid seldom-visited canyons. This landscape has attracted climbers for decades and the unique challenges of the soft-rock spires have pushed development of techniques and equipment. There’s a colorful and exciting history here!
